“The cyanine dye thiazole orange (TO) and its derivatives have been extensively researched and reported in literature for their function as fluorogenic molecular probes.
TO exhibits a remarkably increased fluorescent response when intramolecular rotation about the methine bridge is restricted. TO has been shown to intercalate between adjacent base pairs in double
stranded DNA (dsDNA) with greater affinity for cancer cell DNA, exhibiting a fluorescent
response enhancement of over 1000 fold upon intercalation.
Furthermore, recent reports of
functionalising thiazole orange with biomolecules used in biological processes such as
respiration have shown this route to be profitable to the progression of the imaging sciences,
particularly in oncology.

Many examples of artificial metallonucleases have been reported utilising redox active, first
row d-block metals, such as iron and copper, to generate reactive oxygen species upon the
introduction of a reductant using Fenton or Fenton-like chemistry”.
